Love of Jazz and Soul
In addition to being a player, I've been a collector of Jazz and soul music since my teen years. In terms of Jazz, I lean towards bop, hard bop and soul Jazz. And for soul, I like funk, sweet soul and rare groove/free soul especially. There are many other types of music I like as well.
Aside from the groove organ stuff, some of my favorite genres and sub-genres include:
- Bebop
- Hard Bop
- Hard Swing
- Gospel
- Blues
- '70s soul
- Philly soul
- Curtis
- Fela
- JB
- Gil Scott Heron
- Chuck Brown
- The Ohio Players
- Horn Session Stuff (early Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, TOP)
- Frank Zappa
- ...but my roots, of course, are in classic toe tapping Jazz. (I learned to play organ under Big John Patton. My all time favorite organists and organ groups include Wild Bill Davis, Freddie Roach, Charles Kynard, Baby Face Willette and many others. I'm also a huge Willis Jackson fan -- best Organ/Tenor combo either.
