Finding Pet Friendly Places to Live
There's good news and bad news.
Pet friendly housing is actually abundant in NYC In addition, there are plenty of protections in place for pet owners. As an example there's a one month security cap, and you can't be charged extra pet deposit fees on top of that. And while you may encounter breed bans and weight limitations, there are strict laws in place protecting service and emotional support animals.
Yet, still struggling to find a place? Let's consider some possible reasons.
First, this is one of the few situations where the bigger management companies and landlords are ahead of the game.
If you're hunting for cheaper / for rent by owner type apartments on Craigslist and Facebook you may be hitting a lot of NO PET listings. Many of the bigger pricier places seem to be the ones ahead of the game.
Just now (literally ten seconds ago) I did a general apartment search in Manhattan. Entering no criteria, 14,037 apartment listings came up. Searching "pets allowed" 9,630 still showed up. That's quite a bit!
On the other hand, if you're hunting on a budget that just just doesn't match up with what's available in the area you're looking for, be aware that it may not be the pet. In another words, if you ask your agent for "pet friendly" apartments at a budget that's below the market value of any apartments in the area you're searching, the agent might get back to and say, "Sorry, I couldn't find any pet friendly places," but actually that might mean, "Sorry, I couldn't find you any places int hat area within your budget."
All in all, pet friendly place hunting is not so difficult to find. Just like I did, I go to my database and simply key in your search criteria along with all of your other requirements, and boom, I find plenty of listings for you. If nothing comes up, I see what happens when I change the variables and let you know what's going on.
So, struggling to find pet friendly housing? My first piece of advice is don't give up, and my second... work with me today!
