First, the good news: Security deposit is capped at 1 month in NYC - furthermore, pet deposits count as a type of security deposit.
In regard to "getting out of paying security", that will be difficult, but there are some companies that will pay the deposit upfront for you. You then pay a small insurance fee (as low as only $5.00 a month!)
This option is great if you need to sit on cash reserves to save it for moving and other expenses.
